Shri Maha Sathaiyanar Temple / Sathanur Ayyanar Eswaran Temple in Sathanur Village is one of the famous guardian folk deity temples in Sivaganga district, known to be 200 years old famous temple.

Sathanur Ayyanar Eswaran Temple is located at the entry of the Sathanur village and the Ayyanar is seen riding a horse with a large sword and whip. The divine vehicle or vahana of this Sathanur Ayyanar Eswaran is Elephant and Horse.

At this temple, the Shri Maha Sathaiyanar shiva linga is known to be “Swayambhu lingam” – which refers to the self-manifested deity, which is naturally arisen, which makes this temple’s lingam famously called as the “Thaana Mulaitha Dharmalingam”.

Maha Shivratri and Chithirai Peruvila – festivals are grandly celebrated at the Sathanur Ayyanar Eswaran Temple.

During Chithirai Peruvila festival, thousands of devotees fulfill their vows here by taking “Kavadi” – an offering by carrying containers of milk by the devotees. Some devotees also fulfill vows by having their bodies pierced by Vel’s in different sizes. Some of the devotees dedicate clay horses at the Ayyanar temple festivals.

The nearest airport to Kalayar Kovil is Madurai Airport (IXM) and Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ), Once we have reached Madurai and Trichy we can pick the road to reach Kalaiayar Kovil.
