The Jaggery is a pure, traditional form of sweetness and unrefined sugar, obtained by sugar cane juice and much healthier more than white sugar. The main Jaggery related products include Jaggery, Organic jaggery powder, Achu vellam , Manda vellam.

Thanjavur / Tanjore is one of the largest manufacturers and producers of Paddy and Sugarcane in Tamil Nadu, South India. Because of the high cultivation of Sugarcane in Thanjavur / Tanjore, there are large numbers of Sugarcane mills.

Veeramangudi village in Thanjavur district, there are around 1000’s of home/cottage based cast Jaggery producing industry units. Though manufacturing takes place around the year, the  December – January, Pongal festive season sees the peak demand and large consumption of Jaggery, as people celebrate the harvest festival as a thanks-giving for the Sun God and to the cattle which helps in the farming. More than a dozen groups of people settled in the Papanasam just for producing cast jaggery.

The major Jaggery cottage producing units in Thanjavur district includes Papanasam, Ayyampettai, Iluppakorai, Mahalipuram, Ullikadai, Krishnapuram, Ganapathy Agraharam, Manalur, Devankudi, Veeramangudi, Someswarapuram, Semmangudi, and Pattukudi.

Traditional Jaggery production and manufacturing process include:

The Juice extraction of quality sugarcane from crushing and filtration process, and then followed by boiling & brewed the filtered juice in a shallow large open iron pan. It takes hours with continuous stirring to get concentrated form. After reaching the peak point of correct consistency cooling and Solidfying process follows. Jaggery is produced in different shapes with different molding frames. The organic jaggery generally is in dark color texture.

There are numerous health benefits of consuming Jaggery. It improves our energy level, helps to detox our body as it’s made up of natural antioxidants and minerals. It also helps in digestion and prevents constipation, improves, and boosts our immunity system.
