Hanu Reddy Mango Tourism wonderfully organized the Great Mango Festival, an event to celebrate the “King of Fruits” at their Hanu Reddy Raghava Farms, which has hundreds of finest old mango trees in Othivakkam, a village nearby Guduvanchery, 35 kilometers from Chennai. This year’s current edition of the Great Mango Festival 2024 is taking place during the weekends at their Hanu Reddy Raghava Farms, Othivakkam on June 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd, 2024.

The Great Mango Festival, with its theme Eat, Play, Mango, Repeat! – aims to unite mango lovers to showcase their organically produced various native Indian mangoes and also spread awareness to promote organic and sustainable farming. The Great Mango Festival is the brainchild of Smt. Nirupama Reddy, who is the COO of Hanu Reddy Residences.

Hanu Reddy Mango farms take pride in producing one of the sweetest and most delicious mangoes, which they grows at their farms in Tamil Nadu and Andhra for more than 60+ Years. Their Mangos are always allowed to organically mature on the trees before they are harvested without using harmful chemicals to artificially ripen them.

This family-friendly Great Mango Festival, begins the moment when we enter the farm with a host of activities including Bullock cart rides, Traditional games by Kreeda, ploughing, Storytelling sessions for kids, Mango-centric Culinary Trials, Pottery, and Palm leaf craft to give participants a first-hand farm life experience. The mini-markets showcased and sells a variety of homemade and organic Mango related products for sale.

Mango-Themed Breakfast on “The Table” – an 156 feet Long Community Dining Table

One of the key highlights of the festival is their Lavish Mango Themed delicious breakfast – prepared entirely with mango flavor. From vada to dessert and chutneys to kichadi mangoes is everywhere, all the dishes are made from ripe and raw mangoes in innovative ways. Our plates are delightfully served with Mango Salsa, Mango Medu Vada, Mango Sambhar, Mango Masala Dosa, Aamras Poori, Mango Chamandi, Mango Fish Curry, Aamrakhand, Mango curry, and Mango-based desserts like Mango Pancake, Mango Kesari, Mango tarts. The refreshment booth with fresh ripen Mango juice and Aam Pana was served.

We relished the mouthwatering food on a 156 feet long dining table, which is known to be one of the world’s longest 156 feet most iconic, and majestic community dining table, built by Hanu Reddy Studios, from Mango trees felled by the Cyclone Vardah.

 

The Great Mango Eating Challenge

Another most interesting activity at the Mango Festival is the most fun engaged delicious mango eating challenge, where 1 kg of mangoes is served per person with only rules to eat it to finish it with our hands in a short time, is it a great opportunity for the mango lovers to taste their delicious mangos. The winner of the great mango eating challenge gets 5kg of the Hanu Reddy Mango as a gift.

The festival also showcased the raw naturally ripen Hanu reddy mangoes fresh direct from the trees. We can take our pick from the various Indian native mangos varieties like Javari, Rathnagiri, Patani Kova, Senthura, Banganapalli, Neelam, Imam Pasand varieties, and their naturally produced mango pulps. These mangos are one of the finest mangoes naturally ripened on the trees.

Traditional Fun Games Activities

At the festival there are great collections of traditional Indian games and activities featured by Kreeda like the Pallanguli, coconut shell walks, Panch cone, a giant version of Kattam Vilaiyattu – square game, Aadu Puli Aatam, Dahdi, Tamarind seed game, Hoop rolling, Bangle game – Valayal Villayattu all these games keep us entertained the young children and also the child inside us.

Mango-centric Culinary Trials

The festival hosted the Mango-centric Culinary engaging and interactive session by the celebrity chef, Shri. Rakesh Raghunathan, who walkthrough us on the traditional historic mango food recipes and their significance. For the upcoming days, the fest is set to host another celebrity for the different workshops.

Bullock Cart Rides

The activities like bullock cart rides, on beautifully painted and decorated bullock carts took us to take on a tour ride around the vast Hanu Reddy Raghava Farms – Mango farmland.

Ploughing

The participants also have the opportunity to involve in hands-on experience in the farm activities like ploughing. Participants also had an opportunity to indulge in farm animals petting, visiting pumpset bathing, and vermicomposting.

 Storytelling Sessions

The enthralling storytelling session made the kids and adults enchanted by its engaging stories under the beautiful shades of the Mango trees.

Block Printing Activities

Right across the traditional games section were the activities like a hands-on demo on the block-printing methods using various colorful dyes printed on cotton tote bags.

Pottery Activities

We can experience the beauty of pottery with an interactive demo to make our own tiny pots using the clay on the potter’s wheel.

Palm Leaf Craft Activities

Palm leaf folding and crafting into miniature parrots, fish, and crab explores its lover board.

Mini Marketplace

The festival also featured a mini marketplace to buy various organic products like homemade Mango-related Pickles, Candles, Organic Jams, Traditional Games, Goli Soda, Mango-flavored ice creams, and various eco-friendly lifestyle products.

Overall the great mango festival was the most marvelous and memorable experience. We strongly recommend it as a must-visit place for all mango-lovers and all nature-loving families and kids. This is one of the best “Mango Festival” in India. We bought around 5 Kg of at the great mango festival, which got finished in no time.

By Road: Hanu Reddy farm is located at a distance of nearly 36 kilometers from Chennai hiring around one hour of travel. It’s better to hire a car or go by our own vehicle is the easiest way to reach the farm.
