French War Memorial – first world war memorial for French India in Goubert Avenue, Pondicherry / Puducherry – Visit, Travel Guide

Recently visited the Pondicherry French War memorial located on the Goubert Avenue in white town just opposite to the Mahatma Gandhi statue. It is one of the most notable and historic landmark tourist spot in Pondichery. This French war memorial was built in 1971 and it is solemn reminders of those brave French soldiers who, fought during the First World War.

The French War Memorial displays a magnificence pure white marble architecture with very long pillars and unique collection of armoury.

Every year during the Bastille Day, which is celebrated on 14th of July, the French War Memorial is wonderfully illuminated to pay homage to those brave French soldiers. Pondicherry French War memorial also has a small garden is built around it. Visitor’s entry into the Pondicherry French War memorial seems to be restricted.

The French War Memorial has 4 strong white columns with a soldier’s life-size statue leaning on a rifle with an inscription on the memorial that says,

‘ Aux combattants des IndesFrancoisesmorts pour la patrie, 1914-1918, which literally means French Indian fighters who died in 1914-1918 for their country.

Travel Tips for French War Memorial, Pondicherry / Puducherry:

Address: Beach Road, Goubert Avenue, Pondicherry.

Entries inside the ground are prohibited.

How to reach French War Memorial, Pondicherry / Puducherry:

French War Memorial on Goubert Avenue is located in French Quarter (White Town).We can reach it at a distance of 3.5 km from Pondicherry Bus Station

On Flight: The nearest international and domestic airport is Chennai International Airport (Code MAA). Puducherry’s Domestic airport (Code PNY) is connected to Bengaluru via daily flights – except for Wednesdays. The Air India flight departs Bengaluru at 3:35pm and reaches Pondicherry at 4:35. The return flight departs at 4:55 and reaches at 5:55. This is a 1 hour nonstop flight.

By Train: Puducherry railway station(Code:PDY). Daily connectivity train to Villupuram, Chennai and Tirupathy are available. Tri-weekly trains connecting Pondicherry to Bangalore and Mumbai, other cities like Kolkatta, Bhubaneshwar, New Delhi, Mangalore and Kanyakumari are connected by a weekly train.

On Road: The best connectivity is definitely by road. Multiple buses are ply daily to and fro from Pondicherry to Chennai and Bangalore throughout the day, Pondy also offers over night luxury buses to other major cities of India. Alternatively, one could just book a Taxi or coach for easily accessible from the destinations.
