Naganathaswamy Temple (Ketu) is one of the famous 9 Navagraha temples located in Keezhaperumpallam / Keelaperumpallam, which is 22 km from Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, nearby the Cauvery Delta region Thanjavur. This is a famous temple for Ketu Dosha Parihara kshetram, which is more than 1000 years old and is a Vaipu Sthalam – padigams by Saint Appar.

The main god worshiped at this temple is Shri Naganathaswamy with his consort Sri Soundaryanaki and the presiding deity is Ketu. At the Naganathaswamy Temple, Ketu is enshrined with the head of a snake and body of an asura. This place is also called Vanagiri and is one of the most famous Kethu temples in South India.

In this Naganathaswamy Temple Ketu – the Snake god appears with a human body and Snakehead in a separate sannathi in a position of the west in the north prakaram which worships Lord Shiva.

The Naganathaswamy temple was constructed by great Chola Kings and the temple is of approximately 1900 years of the oldest temple. The historical place nearby place is Poombhukar which is the birthplace of the famous Sri Kannagi of Silappatikaram.

As per the legend, Snake Vasuki was used as the rope for churning. the Milk Ocean for getting the Nectar – Amirtham). When the process went on continuously, the snake was exhausted and it started spewing out the venom.  The venom was swallowed by Lord Shiva – Neelakantan to save the universe. Vasuki felt remorse and wanted to atone for the sin of causing discomfort to the Lord Siva. Hence it started praying at this place. Lord Shiva gave darshan to Vasuki and also praised the Vasuki for its noble service. Vasuki requested the Lord Siva to be always present here and bless the devotees. As Lord Shiva gave darshan to the snake – Nagam, Lord Shiva is also called the Naga Nathar.

People visit this temple to seek relief from Doshas – the ill effects of planet Ketu.  Rahu and Ketu are considered as Shadow Planets – Mercury.  In this temple, He is present with his five-headed serpent head and the human body, facing west. He appears in the worshipping position, praying to Lord Shiva.
