Located on the Mylapore’s Kutchery Road, right in the middle of this historic locality, stands quiet but powerful symbol of Mylapore’s legacy, the Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary. For over a hundred and twenty years, this humble yet iconic institution has been offering authentic Ayurvedic treatment to the people of Chennai, making it one of the oldest running Ayurveda clinics in South India and a must know stop for anyone interested in traditional Indian medicine, heritage walks or holistic wellness tourism in Mylapore.

History & Significance Of Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary
Established in the year 1905, the Venkataramana Ayurvedic Dispensary is among the oldest Ayurveda centres in Chennai and indeed in all of South India. What began as a small free dispensary for the local community has, over twelve decades, grown into a trusted name synonymous with genuine Ayurvedic care, herbal medicine and traditional healing therapies.

The dispensary was founded with a simple yet powerful vision, to make India’s own indigenous system of medicine accessible and affordable to everyone, regardless of their financial background. Even today, that founding spirit continues. Patients can consult qualified Ayurvedic doctors for a nominal token fee of just five rupees, and those who cannot afford medicines can receive a day’s dose absolutely free at the dispensary counter. This is a rare example of heritage healthcare in India that has stayed true to its original mission for well over a century.

The heritage building itself, with its old world architecture on Kutchery Road, has been lovingly preserved and stands as a protected piece of Mylapore’s built heritage, drawing heritage enthusiasts, history lovers and Ayurveda seekers alike.
Visionary Founder V Krishnaswami Iyer
The story of Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary cannot be told without remembering its founder, V Krishnaswami Iyer, one of the most distinguished sons of Mylapore and a towering figure in the legal, educational and philanthropic history of Madras.

Born on 15 June 1863 in Thiruvidaimarudur in Thanjavur district, Venkatarama Krishnaswami Iyer was the second of four sons of Venkatarama Iyer, a District Munsif. He studied at the S P G High School in Thanjavur, where he was a classmate of the future Sir P S Sivaswami Iyer, and went on to study at Government College Kumbakonam and Presidency College Madras before earning his law degree from Madras Law College.
Krishnaswami Iyer rose to prominence as a brilliant advocate in Madras, eventually working alongside Sir S Subrahmanya Aiyar and P R Sundara Aiyar. In 1891, he co founded the Madras Law Journal, a publication that continues to be referenced in Indian legal circles even today. His finest hour as a lawyer came during the famous Arbuthnot Bank case of 1906, where his relentless advocacy for depositors after the bank’s collapse won him widespread public admiration and directly inspired the founding of Indian Bank.

But it was his deep belief in reviving India’s own systems of knowledge that led him to establish some of Mylapore’s most enduring institutions. In 1905, he founded the Venkataramana Dispensary and Ayurvedic College on Kutchery Road to promote indigenous medicine and provide affordable treatment to the public. A year later in 1906, he founded the Madras Sanskrit College, one of his most cherished projects and still a proud institution in Mylapore today.
His goal was to promote higher education in Sanskrit along traditional lines, and he ensured that students received free boarding, lodging and even stipends to support their families, while teachers were given free accommodation, a practice that continues to this day. Over the decades, the college has produced many well known scholars honoured both in India and abroad, standing as a living memorial to his educational vision. He also played a key role in establishing the Mylapore Club, the Ranade Library and the South Indian National Association.

In 1909, Krishnaswami Iyer was appointed a judge of the Madras High Court and was later honoured with the Kaiser I Hind gold medal for his philanthropic contributions. In 1911, he was appointed to the Executive Council of the Governor of Madras, one of the highest positions ever held by an Indian at the time. He also supported causes close to his heart, including funding Swami Vivekananda’s historic trip to Chicago and helping safeguard the affairs of the Kanchi Math during the young Paramacharya’s minority.
Krishnaswami Iyer left behind a legacy of justice, education and indigenous healthcare that Mylapore and Chennai continue to cherish today. The Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary, along with the Madras Sanskrit College, remains one of the finest living memorials to this visionary reformer.
Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary Massage & Treatment Centre
Venkataramana Ayurveda continues to carry forward its founder’s mission of offering authentic, affordable and effective Ayurvedic care to the people of Chennai. The dispensary prepares its own herbal medicines in house, a practice that is increasingly rare and highly valued, since genuine Ayurvedic formulations require carefully sourced herbs that are becoming scarcer by the year. Interestingly, the dispensary has for generations sourced many of its raw ingredients from the same trusted local supplier, Dubba Chetty, a relationship that itself is a small piece of Mylapore trade history.

Every patient who walks in is treated with individual attention. Treatments are tailored according to classical Ayurvedic principles of Prakriti, or body constitution, ensuring that the care given is personalised rather than generic. The doctors here are trained in traditional Ayurvedic texts while also staying updated with contemporary health knowledge, offering a genuinely integrative approach to wellness.
Ayurvedic Treatments & Therapies Offered
Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary offers a wide and comprehensive range of Ayurvedic treatments and therapies for both chronic and lifestyle related conditions. Some of the key treatments available include
Panchakarma Therapy, a complete detoxification and rejuvenation programme that cleanses the body of accumulated toxins and restores balance among the three doshas. Four Panchakarma therapy room for male and female patients.

This range makes Venkataramana Ayurveda a trusted address for anyone searching for Ayurvedic treatment in Chennai, natural pain relief therapy in Mylapore, or authentic Panchakarma centres near Mylapore.
Visiting the Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary felt like stepping back in time while still receiving genuinely effective, modern day care. The old heritage building on Kutchery Road, with its quiet corridors and simple waiting area, has a calm and almost sacred atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. There was no rush, no unnecessary formality, just a warm and welcoming approach from the staff and doctors.
What struck me most was the sheer dedication of the doctors here. They take the time to listen carefully, examine thoroughly and explain the treatment in a way that is easy to understand, all for a token consultation fee that feels almost unbelievable in today’s world. The medicines, prepared right there in house, carry an authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere.
Dhanvantari Temple
Within the same premises stands a dedicated Dhanvantari Temple, honouring the Hindu god of Ayurveda and medicine, offering patients and visitors a moment of spiritual reassurance and blessing before or after their treatment, a detail that adds a deeply devotional dimension rarely found in modern clinics.
Architecture Of Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary
The building that houses the Venkataramana Ayurveda Dispensary is itself a quiet testament to early twentieth century Madras architecture. Constructed in the early 1900s, the structure reflects the simple yet dignified colonial era style common to institutional buildings of that period, with high ceilings, wide verandahs, tiled roofing and thick masonry walls designed to keep the interiors cool through Chennai’s warm climate.

Wooden doors and window frames, along with the traditional courtyard style layout, allow generous natural light and ventilation to flow through the consultation rooms and waiting areas, creating a calm and airy atmosphere well suited to healing. Remarkably, despite the passage of more than a century, the building has been carefully maintained in its original form, with minimal alteration to its façade or layout, making it not just a functioning Ayurveda dispensary but also a modest yet significant piece of Mylapore’s built heritage. For heritage walk enthusiasts and architecture lovers exploring old Chennai buildings, this unassuming structure on Kutchery Road stands as a fine example of how form and function were thoughtfully balanced in the institutional architecture of pre independence Madras.
Walking in to the campus, I genuinely felt that I had experienced something special, a small but powerful piece of living history still serving the people of Mylapore exactly as it was meant to over a hundred and twenty years ago. The dedication of the doctors is truly exemplary, and I sincerely hope that the legacy of this famous Ayurveda institute continues for many more generations to come, so that people can continue to enjoy the gift of natural healing here. It remains, without doubt, a beloved and enduring landmark of Mylapore.
