Arulmigu Narasingam Yoga Narasimha Perumal Temple / Arulmigu Yoga Narasinga Perumal Thiru Kovil is one of the famous rock-cut temples located at Narasingam in Yanaimalai (elephant hill) of Madurai. This temple highly shows the fantastic temple architecture skills of the great ancient Pandiyan kingdom. At this temple, Lord Vishnu bless everyone in his famous Sri Yoga Narashmima avatar.

In the Arulmigu Yoga Narasinga Perumal Thiru Kovil, the main deity is the Lord Yoga Narasimhar and goddess Narasingavalli Thayar. Lord Yoga Narasimhar seen in a Unique standing pose with Sudarsana and Panchajanya in his upper hands while the left lower hand holds the Gatha Ayutham (weapon) and the right one is in the blessing pose.

This temple is also known as “Kodavarai Kovil” as the temple has been constructed by breaking a huge piece of rock from the hill. The name of the hill Yanaimalai – elephant hill is derived from the shape of the hill, as it in elephant shape, hence its also called Gaja Giri Kshetram, Narasingam, or Hasthigiri.

Just near the Arulmigu Yoga Narasinga Perumal Thiru Kovil / temple a beautiful pond filled with full of lotus. Goddess Narasingavalli is adorned with lotus flowers.

Nearby there is Murugan temple and Saibaba Temple. To the west of the temple, there is another cave temple which also constructed over the period of the Pandian kingdom where Lord Murugan with goddess Devasena.

History & Significance of Arulmigu Yoga Narasimha Perumal Temple, Narasingam, Yanaimalai:

Sage Romasa Rishi had installed the Narasimha idol in a cave in the hill is recorded in the Sthala Puranam of the Madurai Koodal Azhagar Temple. Sage Romasa Rishi did penance on the banks of the Padma Thadagam – the lotus pond near the Gajagiri Kshetram currently the present Anaimalai hills, Lord appeared as Ugra Narasimha later lord pacified with the help of Pragalada and granted boon to the sage.

There is another history, once Lord Shiva was afflicted by Brahma Hathi Dosham after he plucked one of the five heads of Lord Brahma, and he gets rid of the dhosam after visiting the place. It’s also believed that taking a dip in the Chakra Theertham, rids one’s all sins or doshas.

In addition to the history of the temple, Pulasthya Maharishi – the great grandfather of Sri Lanka / Langai King Ravana, is also said to have taken penance and had darshan of Lord Narasimhar at this place.

On Road: On Madurai to Melur road, the temple is at a distance of 10 km from Madurai, 5 km from Madurai Mattuthavani (Madurai Central Bus Stand) Busstand, 12 Kms from Madurai Periyar Bus stand. we can easily access the temple by hiring a bus, autorickshaw, or our own vehicle.

On Flight: Madurai International Airport ( Code IXM). We can hire a cab or buses from the airport takes 22 km to reach the Temple.

By Train: Madurai Junction railway station (Station Code MDU). We can hire a cab or buses from the station, it takes 12 km to reach the Temple.
