Recently visited IIT Madras Campus – Nature Walk organised by the Heritage Centre of IIT Madras. The walk was wonderfully led by Professor Susy Varughese, a faculty member of IIT Madras and also part of Prakriti, the wildlife club at IIT Madras (IITM) that conserves the wildlife habitat inside the IITM Campus.
IITM campus is a protected forest and it houses variety of flora and fauna. Animals ranging from Spotted Deer, Palm civets, Blackbuck, Snakes, Monkeys, Birds, Mongoose, Squirrels, Jackals, Toddy & Wild Cats, Turtles and various types of reptiles, a plethora of insects including about 40 different species of butterflies, 100 species of exotic birds, 200 Plants and 150 species of animals can be found inside the rich ecosystem of IIT campus Madras. IITM campus also hosts large groups of migratory birds and butterflies every year.
IIT Chennai Campus is a kind of tropical dry evergreen forest, considered as an ideal example for the co-existence of various types of ecosystems including open grasslands, wetlands, thick forest patches and patches of scrub jungle.
