Recently visited the Thekkady lake located in the Periyar National Park in Idukki, Kerala. This Lake is formed by the construction of Mulla Periyar dam across the Periyar Lake in 1895. Boating at the Lake is the best way to have a closer look at the wildlife habitat in the Periyar reserve. It takes almost 1 hour boat journey and we will get a great view of wild animals like Bison, Elephants, Sambhar deer and a wide range of exotic birds.

Travel Guide to visiting Thekkady Lake Boating

Thekkady (Idukki district) is the location of the Periyar National Park. Thekkady is located about 257 km from Trivandrum, 141 km from Madurai City and Madurai Airport, 145 km from Cochin International Airport and 114 km from Kottayam railway station. Thekkady is located near to Kerala – Tamil Nadu border.

Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary of Thekkady is very famous among tourists as elephant and tiger reserve. The park covers 357 square miles of land. Two main river, Pamba and Periyar runs through the park which helps the flora and fauna to thrive in this region.

How to Reach Thekkady:
There are no direct flights or trains to Thekkady.

On Road: From cities like Cochin, Madurai, Trivandrum, Munnar, Kottayam, one can easily book a cab or get behind the steering wheel of their car to drive to Thekkady.
While on the road to Thekkady, do not forget to keep your camera ready to click pictures of the scenic views. Also, do remember to take an extra 10 to 20 litres of petrol or diesel with you in case you run out of fuel as there is no fuel station nearby.

The most inexpensive way to get to Thekkady from nearby cities of Kerala like Cochin, Trivandrum and Kottayam  and nearby cities of Tamilnadu like Madurai, Dindugal, Theni are the government or private run buses.

Nearest Railway station: Nearest railway station Theni (closed for gauge conversion),
Kottayam Railway Station (Station code KTYM), about 110 KM from Thekkady and Dindugal (Station code DG),are about 136 KM from Thekkady both are the most convenient railway stations for Thekkady. Frequent buses are available to Kumali/Thekkady from Kottayam & Dindugal.

Nearest Airport:  Madurai International Airport (Code: IXM), about 140 km and Cochin International Airport (Code: COK), about 190 km from  Thekkady.Frequent buses are available to Thekkady from Madurai and Cochin or we can can hire a cab to get to Thekkady.
