Recently visited Vintage Bicycle Exhibition in Chennai organized by Pro-Bikers & Ramanujar Moulana of Cycling Yogis Chennai, an project to spread awareness on the history of cycling as a sport and activity. The Vintage Bicycle Exhibition was inaugurated by Prof. Ranganathan, Honorary Consul of Myanmar and also launched the Book “North Chennai Bicycle Trails”.
The vintage bicycle exhibition displayed the oldest and classic bicycle brands from Raleigh, Humber, Rudge, Phillips, BSA, Hercules, Penny-farthing, Robinhood, and Paratrooper Foldable bicycles which are used during the Second World War. The BSA Airborne Bicycle was manufactured in 1940 by Birmingham Small Arms Company. BSA manufactured bicycles exclusively for military use.
John Moses a vintage collector displayed his antique bicycle lamps – 1914 Lucas Silver King that uses petroleum, a Henkel lamp that runs on carbide, and an Indian kerosene lamp. His 1937 Rudge-Whitworth Roadster with three-speed Sturmey-Archer rear hub with a built-in dynamo, a 1970 Raleigh Chopper and 1960 Hercules Ladies Sports were on display. Bicycle lamps powered by Candle Models, Dynamos, Saddle Bags, Tool Kits, Bicycle Licenses, Manuals, Bells and Tricycles. Cyclist’s tax documents and licenses to ride bicycles in the early 19000’s in Madras where also on display.
Another vintage artifacts collector, V Prabhakar who displayed his oldest BSA Airborne cycle which was manufactured in 1940 by Birmingham Small Arms Company, which manufactured bicycles exclusively for military use. Rudge Whitworth 1950, which is fitted with Sturmey-Archer coaster brake hub and English diamond battery light, Japanese Bicycle, Humber Sports 1955 fitted with 1943 German Torpedo coaster brake hub and six volts dynamo, BSA Roadster 1950 fitted with steel handgrips and Sardar oil lamp, Raleigh Roadster 1950 fitted with steel handgrips, drum brakes on both the wheels and Powell.
