The Interpretation Centre Cum Museum – Marine Interpretation cum Museum Centre, an Marine Museum is located on the banks of the Gulf of Mannar in Kunthukal village in Pamban, Rameshwaram.
This Museum Centre along with an aquarium showcases various marine species found in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. The Marine Museum also has a children’s park. The Gulf of Mannar has 21 islands and is one of the richest fauna in the whole of the Indo-west Pacific region, which extends from Rameswaram Island to Tuticorin. It consists of 3 distinct Coastal ecosystems namely coral reef, seagrass bed and mangroves.
It is estimated that the Gulf of Mannar has more than 4,223 species from sea turtles, dolphins, fishes, crustaceans and whales to different types of seaweed, seagrass, mangroves, corals and sponges are found in this coastal region. It makes this ecosystem one of the largest marine ecosystems in the Indian subcontinent.
The Marine Museum is situated near the Kunthukal beach and the Vivekananda Memorial Hall. The Marine Museum is a great tourist place and ideal beach place for picnic for kids, family and friends groups. Kunthukal beach is an ideal beach for picnic and watersports, swimming.
