Edakkal caves are located 1,200 m on the top of sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. The caves are two natural rock formations believed to have been formed by a large outsized split in a huge immersive rock.
One of the stories is that, these caves are formed with the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, the sons of Lord Sri Rama. Another mythology is that it was formed because of Kuttichathan and the Goddess Mudiampilly.
Edakkal caves are well known for its pictorial paintings -cave paintings. You can sight the carvings of human figures, animal figures and objects used by humans on the walls of the caves. These carvings are great evidence for a highly civilized society who lived in the historic age. Edakkal caves have drawn nice attention of archaeologists and historians’ worldwide. Edakkal is the only known place in India with Stone Age carvings. Along with these pictorial carvings, you will additionally watch Tamil and Brahmi Script in Edakkal caves.
The carvings inside are extremely beautiful. A trek up the majestic Ambukuthi Hills is needed to reach these caves. The aroma of coffee stays with you the entire way of your climbing. It will take around 45 minutes to climb the hill and you will never get disappointed in the trip to those historic caves.

There is a booking office at the top of the Ambukuthi Hill where you can book tickets to the cave. Tickets are priced at Rs. 30, and for children below 12 years each ticket is Rs. 20.

Entry Fee: INR 30 Per Person , for Childrens 12 Years INR 20.
Kindly note plastic bags and bottles are not allowed into the caves. If you want to take a bottle, you need to pay a deposit at the entrance of the cave.
You can reach the lower part of the Ambukutty hills via bus or car and from there you have to climb the hills. Till mid way of the hills, you can make use of the jeeps arranged by the DTPC.

How to Reach Edakkal Caves, Kerala Hill Station:
Edakkal Caves is at 97 km from Sultan Bathery.
Nearest Airport: Calicut International Airport (Code: CCJ), Kozhikode. It is located at a distance of 100 km from the city. The airport has access to many international and domestic flights.
How to Reach Edakkal Caves, Wayanad by Road:
A wide network of roads provide access to Wayanad from different parts of Kerala as well as Karnataka. Visitors can board KSRTC buses that run up to Kozhikode at frequent intervals from nearby cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Chennai and Trivandrum. Buses till Wayanad are also available.
How to Reach Edakkal Caves, Wayanad by Rail:
Wayanad district is not connected directly by rail. Visitors can take a train till Kozhikode Railway station ( Station code: CLT), the nearest railway station to Wayanad. Quite a number of trains connect Kozhikode with major towns and cities on a regular basis. After getting down at the station, taxis or buses can be boarded to travel to Wayanad.
