Why the elephants are captured and brought to the Dubare Elephant camp
Elephants which are frequently staying in human habitations, causing crop and property damage, human injuries, and deaths have been captured and translocated or rehabilitated. Elephants that are gravely injured need to be captured and rehabilitated. Orphaned elephant calves are rescued and rehabilitated.
How the elephants are captured and brought to the Dubare elephant camp
When an order to capture the elephant is issued by the chief wildlife warden of the Karnataka forest department after thorough consultations. A team of expert elephant trackers, veterinarians, and departmental support staff is constituted.
“Kumki” or Male working elephants having experience in elephant and tiger rescue operations are selected from various elephant campuses across Karnataka.
When the elephant is tracked by trackers, departmental veterinarians riding the Kumki elephants will sedate the targeted elephant with government-approved non-lethal tranquilizers using a dart gun.
The sedated elephant is then restrained using jute rope with the help of Kumki elephants. The restrained elephant is then given drugs to counteract the effects of sedatives and is thoroughly examined by veterinarians for any injuries.
When the elephants are brought to the Dubare Elephant Camp
If the captured elephant is healthy and uninjured, it is fitted with a radio collar and translocated to a suitable but faraway elephant habitat and released. If the captured elephant is seriously injured or sick or blind or an orphaned calf, then it is shifted to a department elephant camp and rehabilitated.
